Day 54 – Turning Dreams into Reality
Today I’m challenged to list excuses I tell myself when I am about to turn a dream into reality. I am afflicted by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - It’s not so much as an excuse as it is a lifelong struggle for focus and concentration.
From as far back as I can remember, ADHD has impacted my ability to stay on task, complete assignments, or even start projects. The constant battle for concentration has been both frustrating and exhausting. It's like having a mind that's constantly bouncing from one thought to another, making it tough to find a stable foothold in the world that glorifies productivity.
For many with ADHD, medication can be a game-changer. It's that beacon of hope that promises improved focus and better control over one's thoughts. However, there have been times, like earlier this summer, when a nationwide shortage of Adderall left me without medication for three agonizing weeks. The struggle to find a suitable replacement medication was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. It highlighted just how essential these medications can be for individuals like me.
An unexpected ally in my battle with ADHD has been deadlines. Even setting self-imposed deadlines have the remarkable ability to sharpen my focus. It's almost as if the looming pressure of a deadline provides the necessary adrenaline rush to power through procrastination and complete tasks. Understanding this unique aspect of my neurodivergence has allowed me to harness it to my advantage.
I've come to realize that seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a strength. Connecting with friends who understand my challenges, as well as seeking professional help through therapy, has provided me with a sense of belonging and encouragement. Although ADHD often comes with its fair share of stigma and misconceptions, I've found that opening up about my experiences and challenges has helped break down barriers. It's led to greater understanding among my friends, family, colleagues, and community.
To anyone out there struggling with ADHD or other challenges, I want you to know that it's possible to turn your dreams into reality. While the road may be bumpy and filled with detours, your unique perspective and creativity can be assets. Seek assistance, experiment with healthy coping strategies, and don't be afraid to lean into the power of professional support.
Our dreams are worth pursuing and our setbacks don't define our potential.
