Day 7 - Writing a Letter
Today I am going to write a letter to the most important person in my life. The goal is for me to share my appreciation for the good they’ve done in my life and to suggest ideas for how we can improve our relationship moving forward.
I have contemplated the best way to complete this challenge while maintaining privacy for those I love. I am going to write a letter to myself for this blog, but I’ll also write a letter to my person and deliver it to them privately. Here it goes!
Hey you,
I don’t think I’ve written a letter to anyone in quite some time. The longest written communication I’ve sent has got to be a text message totaling a couple of hundred characters at most.
After three false starts, I think I will begin with a story. I remember when employees would come to my office looking for advice or for a safe place to have a moment to experience whatever emotions they were being buried under.
I’d often say to them, ‘you can only give your best. That doesn’t mean giving 100% every day; it means giving the best of yourself, where you are in this current moment in time.’ I’ve said it many times to many people who have needed to hear it…but I’ve never said it to myself.
So, thank you, Holly, for doing your best every day. Thank you for trying, even when it feels overwhelming. Thank you for smiling when it would be much easier to frown. Thank you for speaking up when it would be easier to disappear into the crowd. The easy choice isn’t always the right choice; keep making choices that feel right.
If I could ask you to do one thing to improve our relationship moving forward, it would be to ask you to not be so hard on yourself when things don’t go your way. You can only control your decisions, your actions, and your reactions, not those of others.
Oh heck, I love you and I am so proud of you. You are making a difference; keep up the great work!
With love,
Me
P.S. Keep rockin’ those Chucks.
